Terezín & Úštěk — On the Trail of the Shoah.

Where 155,000 people passed.
Between November 1941 and May 1945, the garrison town of Terezín held more than 155,000 Jewish prisoners from across occupied Europe. It was built as a ghetto and transit point; most of those who passed through went east to Auschwitz. Fewer than 17,000 survived.
Úštěk, an hour's drive north, is a different kind of memorial: a small Bohemian town where the Jewish quarter still stands almost intact — synagogue, school, cemetery on the ridge — preserved by accident rather than design. Your guide, Ruth Hájková, is a historian who specialises in Czech-Jewish communities and has worked with the Terezín Memorial for ten years.
