The story

A millennium in one quarter.

Jews have lived continuously in this bend of the Vltava since the 10th century. By 1270 the Old-New Synagogue was standing — the oldest in Europe still in active use. Rabbi Loew (the Maharal) taught here in the 1590s; the Golem is his legend.

This walk moves slowly through the six synagogues of Josefov — each one a different layer of the community's history — and ends in the Old Jewish Cemetery, where twelve thousand stones lean on one another in seventeen layers. Your guide is a Judaic-studies scholar who reads the Hebrew inscriptions as primary sources.
