Prague from Jan Hus to the Hussite Revolution

The reform movement at the end of the 14th century and the beginning of the 15th century is related to the work of Master Jan Hus, to his preaching, university, and writing activities. After his martyr’s death in Constance in 1415, the principles of his teaching gained growing support in Bohemia. The originally non-violent movement was forced as a result  of the persecution from the adversaries of Hus to an armed revolt (30th July 1419 – the First Prague Defenestration). The following years of the Hussite Revolution (up to the Battle of Lipany in 1434) noticeably involved Prague in the revolutionary events. Prague became the scene of the major battles of the revolution (Battle of Vítkov, Battle of Vyšehrad) and the place of many significant political talks and theological disputes within the  Hussite movement. Prague is thus associated with many important personalities, Hussite theologians and preachers such as  M. Jakoubek of Stříbro, Jan Želivský, John of Rokycany (Jan Rokycana) and others.
